Overview

Cosanta Nutrition develops nutritional supplements with targeted formulation to help prevent or delay the onset of illnesses observed across the world. Our novel approach which helps to optimise the benefits of the essential nutrients to regain and maintain health.

Our first product, ElderThrive™, is a unique nutritional supplement, designed to replenish the precise micronutrients that are needed to retain and restore mental and muscular performance as we age. Older people require a blend of nutrients to support good health. In turn, continued activity and mobility leads to longer and better quality of life.

Inspiration for the company and the product come from co-founder Dr Simon Exton, a consultant physician who works in the care of the elderly. Simon observed over many years that patients admitted to his wards often are in a poor physical state, lacking the reserves to swiftly heal from illness or surgery and regain muscle condition.

The Urgent Challenge of Frailty

The ageing population in developed countries presents significant economic and social challenges. A growing proportion of elderly people is placing increased pressures on public services in the UK, particularly the NHS and social care systems. Demand for emergency medical procedures and long-term care is going to rise, resulting in a financial strain on public spending. 

In particular, hospital admissions from falls are a significant burden. We start to lose muscle in middle age. Sarcopenia is the medical term for progressive loss of muscle mass that often leads to diminished strength and decreased activity levels, which contributes to mobility issues, osteoporosis, falls and fractures. Recovery from geriatric bone breakages can be slow, often resulting in extended periods of reduced mobility. This leads to further muscular degeneration and additional care needs. 

Frailty in the elderly is a significant problem, as highlighted by the NHS Confederation nhsconfed.org/publications/supporting-people-frailty, Age UK ageuk.org.uk/our-impact/policy-research/frailty-in-older-people and the British Geriatrics Society bgs.org.uk/frailty-in-older-people.

There is an urgent need for effective preventative support to mitigate these pressures and improve the quality of life for older adults. These problems are only going to become more severe, given projections for UK population demographics. According to the most recent Office of National Statistics projections published in 2025 ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/populationandmigration/populationprojections/bulletins/nationalpopulationprojections/2022based, there will be marked increases in the elderly population in the coming decades. The projected increase of people in their 80s is remarkable: a +68% rise by 2032. While the number of people in their 50s and 60s in 2047 will increase modestly by +10%, there will be 1.1m more people in their 70s (+18%) and 2.5m more aged 80 or over (+74%). All current concerns regarding frailty in the elderly are going to become more prevalent in the coming years.

ElderThrive:
our solution

The first product developed by Cosanta Nutrition is ElderThrive: a novel nutritional supplement formulation targeted at reducing skeletal muscular degeneration and delaying conditions such as sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia, is the loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength because of ageing and it often causes falls, fractures and disability, ultimately leading to a reduced quality of life and increased morbidity. Eating sufficient protein in our diet is important for maintaining muscle mass and there is increasing scientific consensus that protein requirements for older adults may be higher than the current UK recommendations.

The recommendation is that sarcopenia is managed through nutrition and exercise: there is no available drug currently on the market. Cosanta Nutrition's medical professionals have identified that there can often be issues ensuring the elderly are getting the correct nutrition. ElderThrive will provide the necessary nutrients in flavours and formats tailored for older consumers.
